FAQ

Adding Recipes

Our main goal is to allow quick and easy creation of recipes. When it comes to mobile devices, the simplest way to save something is by taking a photo of it. What kind of photo? Anything. A cut out of a magazine, a recipe printed from the internet, handwritten recipe card, a page in your favorite cookbook, a screenshot of a web page with an interesting recipe. In the app those photos are organized by categories and tags, turning this messy recipes pile into a well structured, digital recipe collection.

In order to save a recipe, you don’t have to type. Taking a photo (or choosing one from your gallery), and saving it in the right category under a suitable title, will do the work. But if you want to enjoy the more efficient search abilities: we strongly recommend that you do as little typing as tagging the main ingredients and keywords. You can do it any time later, and we are talking about typing just several words, not whole recipe.
In addition, there is way to input a recipe by “copy+paste” from somewhere. You simply paste the whole copied text, and the app will separate it automatically into ingredients and steps, by “end of line” character.

Taking a photo is the easiest version, but you are not limited only to that. Sometimes it is easier to type in a recipe. When at a friends house they will often recite a recipe to you rather than write it down.
Designed for those cases, the app has a feature of entering a recipe as a free text note. You can write there whatever you wish: from short personal notes, to full recipes you copy from the web and paste in this text field.

Yes, you can. Nowadays the Internet is a major source of cooking inspiration, hey, we use it ourselves all the time. We support automatic recipe extraction from any website that implements the JSON-LD data standard. All you need to do is press a “Save” button, and the recipe will be clipped from the webpage right into your app!

For those website that are not yet supported, currently the best way to save them is by taking a screenshot of the web page, and then using this picture like any other photo in your gallery. This solution makes the recipe always available, you do not depend on internet connectivity or the webpage existence in the future.

Yes, you can. Press the “Share” icon of your Safari browser, and scroll to find OrganizEat icon among the sharing options. Here is a video explaining how it works!
Note: this feature requires to signup for an OrganizEat account.

With each recipe you can save 3 photos. It can be any kind of photos that you like: the photos of the recipe itself, or of the dish once you cooked it. With the photos you can save any free text that you want: personal comments, nutrition values, or even a whole recipe text you “Copy” from web and “Paste” here. You also have an option to add a list of structured ingredients and preparation steps to your recipe, if you wish.

Use the comment for that. Each recipe has a comment field, to enter any free text you wish. You can write the recipe source there.

The maximum number of photos for a recipe is 3. The reason we limit the number of photos is storage space. We are offering recipes backup, for unlimited number of recipes, free of any additional charge other than the app itself. Therefore we are limited in the amount of storage we can offer without charging extra for it.

Organizing Recipes

You cannot search pictures, but by adding short tags for main ingredients and keywords, you make your recipe searchable. Obviously, the recipe title and notes are fully searchable right from the beginning. The same goes for recipes clipped from web. You can search for tags and keywords in all the saved recipes, combine multiple tags indoor search, or you can narrow your search to be within a specific category only (for example: search for “cream” only in the “Cakes” category…).

You can use tags for that.
Add the tag word “Brian” to all the recipes you know Brian would eat. Tags are searchable, so if you will search for the keyword “Brian”, it will give you a list of all the recipes tagged with this word.
Using tags this way, and combining tags, you can create unlimited number of “subfolders” suited exactly for your needs.

Yes!
OrganizEat allows you to customise your folders, rename and reorder them, and also create new ones. For a more information please see this detailed tutorial about Folder Management options in OrganizEat app

Technical Questions

OrganizEat is a universal app, which runs on all iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch). This means that when paying for it once, the app becomes available for you on all your iOS devices. You have to download it from the Appstore in every device, but you will not be charged again.

No problem! OrganizEat supports both Android and iOS. This means that when paying for it once, the app becomes available for you on all your devices, Android and iOS. You can purchase your upgrade from any of the devices, then login into your OrganizEat account in the app on the other device: and the app will become unlocked there too!

Yes. We have a web version as well, that runs in your computer browser. Therefore, you can use OrganizEat from any computer, Windows or Mac.

In order to synchronize the recipes among your devices, you need to sign up and create OrganizEat account. You can do it from the app settings. Once you login in with your username and password, you can perform “Sync recipes”: upload to our cloud server the recipes you have on your phone (iPhone or Android), and download the latest changes you made to recipes on your iPad or computer.

So in order to bring recipes from your phone to your iPad (or computer):
1) on your phone: go to app “Settings” page, sign up, then “Sync recipes”. This will upload your recipes from your phone to our cloud server.
2) on your iPad: go to app “Settings” page, login with the same username, then “Sync recipes” again. This will get all the recipes from our cloud server to your iPad device.

Yes. When performing “Sync recipes” your recipes are uploaded to our cloud server. This means they are also backed up there. If your phone breaks, or you switch to a new device: once you log in with your username, and choose “Sync recipes”, you will get from the server all your recipes that you have backed up there.

Note: by signing up for sync service you agree to our Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy

Yes! This was an important feature for us, as we know that sometimes cooking happens somewhere without internet access, such as while camping. We do this by caching your saved recipes in your device’s local storage. All you need to do is pull up a recipe, which triggers the download and caching of its photos, and you’ll be untethered. In order to save space on your device, images are triggered to be cached only when the recipe is viewed in the app.

In order to answer your question, we need to explain a little bit about how recipe are being stored inside OrganizEat app.
When someone creates an account, and syncs his recipes with the cloud – we did not want our users to depend on internet connection in order to access their recipes. People need to access their recipes when they are camping, for example, and there is no internet available. So we adopted the following solution: recipes are available offline, but only after they’ve been initially downloaded to your device. This means that during the sync, OrganizEat downloads from the server the recipes you have in your account, and stores them inside your app in a local database. Therefore, once a recipe was downloaded, it becomes available offline. The recipes also contain photos that have been uploaded to the server. The photos are downloaded “on demand”, and the trigger is simply viewing the recipe. When you open a recipe for viewing, its photos are being downloaded, and stored locally in the app. The next time you’ll access this recipe, the app will show its local copy, and will not go online for it. It’s a common practice in software development, called “caching” of images.
These local “cached” photos, they obviously take a lot of your device’s memory. So what you can do in order to save memory, is to clear this cache every once in a while. You can do it by simply logging out from your account at the app. Logout will clear all your local information, and without it the app will take almost no memory at all. Then, as you will start using your recipes, the ones that you’ll open will be downloaded to your device “on demand”, and local copy of the photos will again be created. So the memory usage will gradually increase again, until the next time you’ll want to clear it.
Two important things to remember before you clear the cache by logging out:
1) Before you logout, please make sure you sync all your recipes, to avoid losing them.
2) Offline access: recipes that you didn’t open yet, and were still not downloaded into your app: you’ll need internet connection to access them for the first time (after that, they will be “cached” and therefore become available also without internet)

Account Questions

No, you don’t have to. You can use OrganizEat without creating an account for as long as you like. But you will not be able to share recipes among different devices, and there will be no backups for your recipes (other than the default iTunes backup of your phone). You can also give OrganizEat a try and sign up later.
Many of the features we are adding, or are adding soon – such as saving a recipe while browsing Safari, or syncing between iOS and Android – are impossible without an account. We do not use or sell your recipes-that’s a promise. Your privacy is very important to us. Your recipes are stored password protected, and are absolutely private. Nobody can see them but you, so no need to worry about uploading secret family recipes!

We are not using iCloud for storage.
We are using our own servers, technically they are built on Google servers infrastructure.
Why did we make such a decision? Well, iCloud default storage space is very limited, and many people don’t upgrade their iCloud accounts to more than the default storage space. We do not want to depend on that. Also, we want to provide cross platform support (iOS, Android and Web browser on your computer). We couldn’t do that using iCloud, because iCloud is limited only to iOS devices and Mac computers. This is why backup & sync feature requires to signup for an OrganizEat account, and doesn’t use iCloud

OrganizEat app is a subscription service, for the yearly price of $3.33/month, billed annually as $39.99/year (all prices are mentioned in USD). There are no long-term commitments. If you don’t like the app: you can cancel your subscription any time, and you will not be charged anything anymore. Since October 1, 2022 the mobile app upgrade also includes our Computer version. No need to pay again for computer access to your recipes (unless you are a legacy user with an older version of the mobile app subscription).

The subscription cancellation, like all the money related issues, is controlled by Apple iTunes and Google Play. App developers like ourselves don’t have the access to your credit cards, and sent control the payments. These are the rules set by Apple/Google for their platforms, so it’s not just for our app, that’s the way it is for all the apps on the various app stores.
Please read the official guide about managing and cancelling Appstore and Google Play subscriptions. They have very detailed explanations, with screenshots and examples:

Sharing Recipes

Sharing recipes with friends that also use OrganizEat app is very convenient. You can share recipes directly with them by email. The email has a special format, that will be recognized by their OrganizEat app, and it will automatically save the shared recipe within their app.

Yes! Your sister would have to use OrganizEat too 🙂
You can mutually share your entire OrganizEat recipe account with a family member or a friend. You will see all his recipes, and he will see all your recipes! However, you can only view the others recipes, without the ability to edit them. It’s is like sharing a Google Drive, but for recipes

Yes. Once your recipe has been uploaded to the server for sync and backup, the system also generates a link to it, that everyone can view. So you can share a recipe with people who don’t use OrganizEat by sending them this link via email, or text message, or posting it to your favorite social network.
And finally, you can always export the recipe into a PDF file, and send it to the less tech savvy people in your life.

General Questions

Currently, the number of recipes you can store in your account at the cloud server is set to 4000 recipes per account.
This is the limit for an account that is synced with our cloud server. If you don’t sync your recipes with the cloud, and store them only locally on your device, then there is no limitation on the number of recipes in the app. You can have as much information there as your device memory allows.

Yes! OrganizEat Computer Version is our web-browser supported version:
http://web.organizeat.com
You can access your recipes from your desktop as well as the mobile apps.
We support Safari and Chrome web browsers for Mac computers, and Chrome & Edge browsers for Windows computers.

Please note that since October 1, 2022 the computer version usage also included in the iOS app subscription!

subscription: you can purchase the computer access to OrganizEat directly on the web.

The computer version is not part of the Android app subscription yet. If you are an Android user you can purchase the computer access to OrganizEat directly on the web.

Computer Version Questions

Yes.
As of October 1, 2022 the Computer version is part of our iOS app upgrade. So, if you are an iOS app user there is no need to pay separately for the computer version.

If you purchased your mobile app upgrade before October 1, 2022, the computer access is not part of our mobile app upgrade package.

Today the computer version is part of our app upgrade, which include both mobile and computer usage of OrganizEat. The upgrade costs $39.99/year (USD), and includes everything, mobile and computer.

The Computer Version cost for legacy mobile app users, is $11.99/year (USD). this is the price for our legacy users, who purchased their app upgrade in the past, when the computer version was not yet available.

You can purchase the Computer Version upgrade from within the web browser on your computer (please see screenshot below). Unlike the mobile app upgrade, the Computer Version subscription plan can not be purchased on the Apple Appstore or Google Play store. We use PayPal to process the payment, so credit card information is not revealed to us at any stage. Instead, PayPal notifies us of the purchases made, keeping the credit card information to itself.

Mobile and Computer versions sync. If you have a mobile subscription: the recipes you add from your mobile app are synced with the server. You can log in to the Computer version and see your recipes there, even without the Computer subscription (we cannot promise it will remain so forever and may change this policy in the future…). So, you will be able to view your recipes on the Computer but not edit them there (on the Computer)
